Sabotage…it’s not just a cool Beastie Boys song or one of the worst Arnold Schwarzenegger movies ever but is an unspoken word that can cause great harm. By very definition it means: damage something: to damage, destroy, or disrupt something deliberately. However in the terms I am speaking of, adding the word SELF before it changes the music just a bit. Why would we deliberately want to destroy or disrupt something that we are doing to benefit ourselves?
That is the conversation I have had with so many of my clients repeatedly. As a fitness professional, we wear many hats. In addition to the obvious trainer hat, we are also coaches and advocates for your own wellness and health as well as motivators for you to succeed and exceed your goals! However, as a client, it becomes difficult to see that through if one decides to not fully participate or buy into the program. You begin to wonder why you aren’t making any gains or seeing any real differences when you are exercising upwards of 3-5 times a week and seeing a trainer for 3 of those days. It is because somewhere in your 7 days, you are deliberate or undeliberate in your choices of food, cardio, rest etc. How many times have you said, “I worked hard today so I deserve to have XYZ”? Most likely, one too many if your clothes are just as tight if not tighter or your strength levels are not where they should be.
So again I ask, why would we deliberately want to destroy or disrupt something that we are doing to benefit ourselves? You have invested time, effort and precious income to ensure that progress will be made, goals will be reached and you can now fit back into clothes on the other side of the closet. However, it’s a vicious cycle that needs to be stopped. When I work with individuals, I challenge them in the best ways I know how so they benefit fully from our time together. But unfortunately, I cannot shadow them 24/7 to stop them from making poor choices. You can work hard all you want but you will keep running into that brick wall called SABOTAGE unless you find ways to start pushing back.
Invest in your health and you will invest in yourself! Reap the R.O.I. (Return on Investment) and you will always be thankful and grateful. Your habits will change, your life around you will begin to change and those around you will take notice. So instead of speaking the unspeakable sabotage, call upon another unspoken word: ACTION. It cannot be stated or better yet, demonstrated enough…actions speak louder than words!
